Today, August 31 2013, Paul and I installed the mosaics on the overpass. It took 6+ hours in 93 degree heat, but it got done in one day! There will be a reception during the Day of Doing, sometime in late September. Watch for more photos later.
Groove in the Grove
This is a temporary public art project. These 18 stucco and mosaic embedded wooden figures will be temporarily bolted to the railing of a Jordan River overpass on 7th South and 10th West from the end of August 2013 through Spring 2014. Refer to the button above for information about the student workshops held during the design phase of this project.
On Monday July 29th, Poplar Grove had their annual Info Fair at the Pioneer Precinct on 700 South and 900 West. This was our first opportunity to introduce the 700 South Bridge Art Project to the community. It was very well received and many of the residents expressed excitement over the beautification of an overpass by their homes. In fact, city council member Kyle LaMalfa of District 2 expressed an interest in seeing more overpasses in his district adorned with similar imagery.
Special thanks to Roni Thomas of the Salt Lake Arts Council for helping to set up, tear down, and providing entertainment during the event, Nick Britton of the Planning Division for his suggestions and enthusiasm for this project, Melanie Franti of the Jordan River commission for the maps and stickers that we handed out. and everyone who helped the event to be a success.
