Three Totems for Sorenson"I claim that within each one of us there is a story to be shared and listened to." |
The work at the Sorenson Unity Center:
From Liz Bunker, lead educator: "The Claim It! class at Youth City was made up of third and fourth graders from Glendale. They worked to define the theme of “claim it,” looked at other's claims, and looked at how other artists claim spaces. The main themes identified were: family, neighborhood authenticity, clean neighborhoods, access to books and quality school for both the students and their friends, being who we really are, future dreams coming true, people getting along, and money (to thrive). Over several months of work, we developed and illustrated claims, identified themes and ideas, and worked within different mediums and art concepts. With all of this activity, we ultimately created an interactive 3D art piece that showcases students’ written and visual claims, all while developing ideas for a public artwork. The students’ ideas and claims are displayed through photographs, drawings, 3D elements, writing, and symbolic imagery." The stacked cubes that display the students work on this project were the inspiration for the public art display at the Sorenson Unity Center. We chose to create three totems to represent each of the three sites:
